“Prius set the global benchmark for hybrids, but now is breaking its own boundaries with more engaging style and fun-to-drive dynamics”, said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division.

Toyota unveiled the latest version of the Prius on Tuesday night with a glitzy display in Las Vegas.

The Prius is a big deal for Toyota, so keep it locked on DT Cars for more information about new variants (plug-in hybrid, anyone?), equipment (did someone say optional all-wheel drive?), and pricing specifications.

Prius, introduced nearly 20 years ago, was the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle coupling a gasoline engine and an electric motor, delivering higher fuel economy and fewer emissions than conventional cars.

Toyota isn’t saying if or when that model and a larger Prius V will be redesigned. The vehicle is longer and sleeker with the overall outline evoking an athletic shape. And it gets even better because Toyota is bringing out an Eco-model which should delight a couple of hypermilers out there.

“We’re pulling out all of the stops for this exclusive event to celebrate the future of Prius in a truly spectacular way that will be anything but expected”, Toyota had promised attendees. Toyota even claims the Prius’s lower stance means that its front badge as at the same height as that of the Scion FR-S. It features a lower center of gravity and promises a more responsive rear double wishbone suspension. They can also expect a 10% mileage increase from the Toyota Prius. The green vehicle will come at a precarious time for the segment in the United States especially, where gasoline prices have plunged and passenger cars have been deserted in favor of crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks – Prius sales have dropped 24 percent in August. The previous model can run at 51 miles a gallon.

Toyota also suggests that fuel economy is one aspect of any auto but now customers also search for a vehicle that has great looks as well as performance.

In recent years, the Prius had become rather drab when compared to its competitors.

In addition to better fuel economy and a new look, Toyota is also offering a new suite of safety technology features. TNGA is Toyota’s new manufacturing system, which aims to standardize parts, development, and production so cars are easier to create and get out onto the market. This includes things like pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning and full-speed dynamic radar cruise control.
