Grandson of Nelson Mandela appears in court charged with raping 15-year-old

The 24-year-old’s bail application was postponed to Tuesday‚ August 25‚ when he appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday afternoon. Mashadi Selepe. He appeared briefly in court Monday when he was charged with rape.



The rape allegedly took place in a toilet at a restaurant in Greenside, a Johannesburg suburb, on August 7, police said.

Sources tell local newspaper the Daily Sun that Mandela’s grandmother, Winnie Mandela, sent her bodyguard to the alleged victim’s home after the incident in an attempt to talk them out of pursuing a case against Mbuso.

Mbuso Mandela is one of late statesman Nelson Mandela’s 17 grandchildren.

Police are adamant that Mbuso will be treated the same as any citizen who is accused of this crime, despite being the grandson of the late anti-apartheid leader. The complainant alleges Mandela followed her to the bathroom.

The 24-year-old, who can not be named until he enters his plea, is accused of raping the teenager in the toilets of a bar in Johannesburg. After the attack, the Mandela family tried to interfere with cops’ investigation, the victim’s family claimed. Madikizela-Mandela, still a politically powerful woman in South Africa, promised to ask the provincial police commissioner to handle the case and said her family would also hold a press conference, the spokesman said. The undercover bodyguard allegedly told the girl’s family that police would not arrest the suspected rapist. “When the father asked to see his badge, he did not any”.

The Mandela family has not commented. The owner, Yaw Dwomoh, said they would be more than happy to cooperate with the police, but no one from law enforcement has stopped by to question the owner or the staff.

In March, another grandson, Mandla Mandela, was convicted of assaulting a schoolteacher in a road-rage incident. While the Chief of Mvezo, Mandela was found guilty of assault, he was acquitted on a charge of pointing a firearm.

There was the family feud over the bones of three of Mandela’s children, which erupted shortly before his death in 2013 and had to be resolved in court.
