Ten years after Hurricane Katrina, Google adds weather trackers, safety advice and more features to its search results.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has planned ahead for the new hurricane season and wants to ensure that citizens are prepared for the new hurricane regardless of the scope or category of the damage.

This includes showing you a map of where your location is in relation to the oncoming storm, visualizations of its forecasted track, wind speed, arrival time, courtesy of NOAA, and it will also provide users with instructions on how to prepare and stay safe, all of which will be based on the intensity of the storm and its arrival time relative to where you are.

This new update from Google will improve the weather forecast and alert public for future consequences.

With the U.S. hurricane season about to kick off, Google announced today that it’s expanding the weather-related information that will appear in Google search results when web users search for information about particular storms or tornadoes.

Google said that when hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast of the U.S.in 2005, some of its employees worked with third-party organizations to display satellite imagery of affected areas in Google Earth and helped build searchable databases so people could check on the safety of friends and loved ones. “And if you search when the storm is nearby, you’ll get the most urgent information, like how to avoid injury from fast-moving water or flying debris”. However, if the storm is just a few hours away, the recommendations instead may instead suggest that you start charging your phone in anticipation of a power outage. This is a commendable venture by the tech giant, and even though all the information is there on the internet if one knows where to look, bringing the data directly to consumers via a simple Google search can help people prepare for a potentially life-changing event.
