He’s been named the new CEO of Google. Fortune referred to Pichai’s meteoric rise through Google’s ranks as “one of the fastest corporate ascents in the technology industry”. All we know now is that the six letter word Google, derived from the world Googol meaning 1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, doesn’t denote enough possibilities. That will bring a fresh chapter in the search engine giant’s life. “I am really excited to be running Alphabet as CEO with help from my capable partner, Sergey, as president”.
The new structure could make it easier for Google Inc.to sell off some of its unrelated businesses, or buy new ones, analysts said.
Though he was just appointed CEO of Google, Pichai has effectively been responsible for day-to-day operations at Google since October 2014. He went to IIT Kharagpur, then managed a scholarship to Stanford University and finally did an MBA from the school of Wharton in the University of Pennsylvania.
The restructuring will see the separation of Google from the group’s more speculative ventures.
With his elevation, Pichai joins the big league of Indian-origin CEOs in at least half a dozen Fortune 500 companies, including Indra Nooyi at Pepsi, Ajay Banga at Mastercard, and Sanjay Mehrotra at SanDisk. Sundar Pichai on the other hand will be the CEO of Google.
If it did, then it might have to contend with legal fallout for potentially trampling on the trademark rights of what is a fairly common brand among dozens of businesses, including the BMW-owned auto leasing company. He started off in Google working on their Toolbar followed by leading the famed browser Chrome in 2008.
Google will continue to focus on internet products. Google becomes a separate subsidiary that controls the search and advertising businesses, Android mobile operating system development, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Ads, and the Google Play sales franchise.
“This new structure will allow us to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities we have inside of Google”, Page said.
Chris Andrikanich owns the Twitter handle @alphabet and was no doubt inundated with notifications as people mistook his name for the new Google company.
Looking at Alphabet, it’s the company I’d be building if I was helping to create that Vingean tomorrow. Nest will be led by Tony Fadell, Sidewalk Labs by Dan Doctoroff, and Calico by Arthur Levinson. As CEO, he’ll oversee YouTube too, although Susan Wojcicki will remain YouTube’s chief executive.
Google may have given birth to Alphabet Inc. on Monday, but don’t expect it to become a household name.
