Google Express has been providing grocery delivery in partnership with retailers including Costco, and Whole Foods Market for around a year.

Google Express allows users to shop at any of the sixteen local participating stores, online or through their app. For a fee, shoppers can have the item(s) delivered to their house the next day.

Google plans to test a fresh food and grocery delivery service in two cities – one of them San Francisco – as it seeks to lure more traffic to its Web sites, Bloomberg News reported.

Google Express first launched in the spring of 2013 in San Francisco and Silicon Valley before its public launch later that fall. The plan is now to capitalize on the cachet of the existing brands Google has joined with – Elliott said the plan was “to connect people with their favorite stores”, and the site features logos from those stores – including Amazon competitor Barnes & Noble.

Now it’s also available in six states spread across the Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Last year, it expanded into major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C. Now it has arrived in West Michigan.

Google is entering an already crowded field, where players include old guard FreshDirect as well as AmazonFresh and Instacart. Non-members pay $4.99 per delivery from each store, provided the order is worth $15 or more, he said.

“Today, we’re very excited to be further expanding our efforts – making it easy for over 25 million people in the Midwest to get things they need from stores they love – delivered overnight”, said Brian Elliott, Google Express general manager, in a statement. “We are a shopping delivery platform”. What’s more, to attract early adopters, Google offers a free 3-month trial with the ability to cancel at any time.
