Under the new structure, the company’s core internet advertising business, which includes its search engine, Android smartphone software and YouTube video service, will be just one subsidiary of Alphabet. The company says its new structure will give more independence to many of its wide-ranging and ambitious projects.
After Google’s announcement, many in the tech community said that the company’s move might create confusion with regards to properly identifying the difference between Google and Alphabet.
Yesterday came the big news that Google was reorganizing itself, and putting the company, and its other properties under a new umbrella called Alphabet.
In other news, cloud advisory firm Cloud Sherpas has helped supermarket Waitrose implement Google Apps for Work into its business.
Mr Page and Sergey Brin, who co-founded Google two decades ago while at university, will be chief executive and president of Alphabet respectively.
“What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies”, Page wrote in a blog post.
As Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc.as the publicly-traded entity, Google shares will convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet. What Google didn’t do was turn themselves into a different company. “Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren’t very related”.
In a significant re-organization, Lary page announced Sudhar Pichai, who was the in-charge of product and engineering for Google as a new CEO of largest Search giant. Companies that will move to direct control of Alphabet – essentially in equal rank to Google – will include Google Fiber, Google Capital and Google X, as well as recent acquisitions such as Nest, Calico and Life Sciences. Each of these businesses will have its own CEO and business strategy.
Google shares soared 5 percent in after hours trading yesterday as the news of the restructuring broke.
While Google is known as the dominant player in Internet search, it has launched a variety of projects in recent years that are marginally related at best to its core operation. The name also consists of the word “alpha” which means an active return in the investment industry.
Meanwhile, Google Founders Page and Sergey Brin will shift their focus to Alphabet.
