Google Cancels Project Ara Launch in Puerto Rico

The search engine giant reported in January that Puerto Rico was the best test market due to its diverse inhabitants. Sounds like Project Ara is trying to adopt that jokey conversational tone that brands like to annoy us with so much.

It seems the Puerto Rico launch is off, at least for now.

After a somewhat long period of silence Google’s Project Ara Twitter account sprang to life yesterday with a few tweets updating everyone with what is going on with the project. There is speculation however, that Google’s new restructuring at the corporate level may have had something to do with the sudden announcement of such a hyped project being put on something of a current indefinite hold. Then starting on Wednesday the account lit up to let the world know that Project Ara is still ticking and that: “We’ve been busy…making stuff”, with apologies for the hiatus.

While it has shown off the tech at an event here and there, however, and it’s been recruiting hardware and software developers to fiddle around based on its open design plans, an actual, working Project Ara handset has never been seen in the wild.

According to the official website, the project itself aims to make phones customized for each consumer’s needs and aims to bring internet to an estimated 5 billion people.

Will Project Ara ever actually launch? Puerto Rico will simply not the site of the test launch. Project Ara may be pushed to another division inside the Alphabet umbrella, or strike out as an independent arm inside the company. It is still unclear where the new market will be. So if your phone original came with 1GB of RAM, you could upgrade it to 2GB. That image was taken with a Project Ara smartphone assembled by a Google engineer during a presentation from the ATAP group. For instance, when processor becomes outdated, users would be able to substitute it from a new one.
