Google’s is giving developers a little more breathing room for their apps.

Developers, Google is increasing the size of APK files that you can upload to Google Play to 100MB. That’s up from the old limit of 50MB and will allow developers to push out bigger app packages without a warning to the user, which will now only appear when apps are over the 100MB quota. Now, rather than downloading an app followed by additional updates once the installation is complete, larger apps can now be downloaded and installed in one fell swoop. This was often the case with games whose supporting textures, music and video content simply couldn’t fit into 50MB. Previously, Google had file sizes limited to 50MB, which was less than ideal for developers.

The idea is not to encourage the development of bloated apps, but to provide a way to “build higher quality apps and games that users love”. With mobile data connectivity, mobile data caps, overall app performance and install time listed as caution areas, Google wants to make sure developers are using the increased file limitations for the correct reasons.
