Gas prices jumped $0.20 in Winnipeg on Wednesday afternoon.
Filling up at one of the pricier stations (122.9 cents per litre)- the Petro-Canada at 177 Country Hills Boulevard N.W. – Zoe Lumsden said she was going to run out of gas within two minutes, leaving her no choice but to pay more than she’d wanted.
Jason Toews, co-founder of GasBuddy.com, said prices were all over the map on Wednesday, as some discounters were still selling gas for just over $1 a litre (Regina Messenger at 1609 Halifax St. and Regina Cabs at 3405 Saskatchewan Dr.), while other stations were selling for less than $1.08 per litre.
Yet another blow to Albertans, as the price of gas is about to spike.
Roger McKnight, a chief petroleum analyst with Enpro, says these commodities are not attached at the hip, as many think.
This lack of production has driven prices up in the midwest and also in Canada, says McKnight. “We could see prices start to increase as soon as retailers sell-off their inventory, they will have to buy gasoline net 14,15 or 16 cents higher than what they would have paid Monday morning”.
The partial shutdown at the refinery is expected to last for at least a month and, as a result, gas prices will likely remain high for the rest of the summer.
He says the reason for the increase is largely due to a BP refinery in Indiana having to shut down unexpectedly for maintenance.
Also, refineries in the U.S., specifically have been operating under capacity.
