16 people have been pulled out of the debris; six are still feared trapped.
Over ten people have also been injured in the incident.
Eyewitness said that the narrow lanes and unauthorized structures in the vicinity was creating a lot of difficulty for rescue and relief teams.
The fire brigade found it hard to access the Matrukripa building in Mira Nagar area near Dombivli due to the congested lanes and bylanes. It was raining heavily at the time. 15 families lived in the building among whom some were evacuated before the building collapsed.
Police sources said they fear rains could hamper the rescue mission.
The building is said to be 35 years old and was in a dilapidated condition.
After receiving the information, 12 firemen and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were immediately rushed to the spot.
According to Regional Disaster Management Committee (RDMC) chief Santosh Kadam, “The building “Matru Chhaya” crashed at about 10.40 pm following heavy downpour”. District Guardian Minister Ekanth Shinde, Kalyan MP Srikanth Shinde, Collector Ashwini Joshi and other top officials are monitoring the rescue and relief work.
