The recall is part of several global announcements by Fiat Chrysler involving 1.5 million Dodge Ram and Chassis Cab pickups.
Some may have steering wheel wires that can wear from hitting a spring. The company is aware of two accidents tied to the defect, but no injuries.
The larger of the two recalls is directed at 2012-2014 Ram pickups of essentially all configurations.
The biggest issue involves a steering wheel harness that can wear and cause inadvertent air bag deployment on the driver’s side.
FCA says that in some cases, an airbag warning light will illuminate in the cluster to indicate a problem before it escalates to failure, but this only applies to vehicles equipped with an Electronic Vehicle Information Center.
The company is also recalling 323,183 trucks in Canada, Mexico and outside the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region to fix wiring harnesses and bracket welds.
The second recall covers about 188,000 Ram Quad Cab pickups from the 2014 and 2015 model years. The company said it only knew of one “minor” accident due to the problem and no injuries.
Fiat Chrysler says the side curtain air bags don’t comply with federal regulations that protect rear passengers if the trucks roll over. The company is now mailing notices to owners telling them about the recall.
