It’s disappointing that Zinke tried to put a pro-consumer spin on his vote. The World Trade Organization has ruled COOL to be unfair trade restraints against Mexican and Canadian beef.
The bill is not law yet, as the U.S. Senate has not approved it yet. Our rights have been trampled on, and you have the right to know who has bought in this recent landslide vote in favor of the biotech industry and business as usual that protects profits instead of people. Others have suggested that its simply a matter of consumers right to know whats in their food.
A bill introduced in the Senate on Thursday would change Country-of-Origin meat labeling from mandatory to voluntary-a move that clashes with a bill passed in the U.S. House earlier this summer to repeal COOL.
To be sure, it would be a headache for national businesses to comply with a variety of state standards. “And there is some evidence that the label will increase consumer confidence in GM technology among certain groups”.
Michael Gruber of the Grocery Manufacturers of America, the industry group leading the fight against mandatory labels, says those who want the labels are trying to scare people away from genetically modified foods. But the White House has so far been silent on the House bill. But opponents have dubbed it Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act.
An Associated Press poll conducted in December found that two-thirds of Americans want GMO food labeling. That law will take effect in July 2016 if it survives a legal challenge from the food industry. Connecticut and Maine have labeling laws that would take effect if their neighboring states enact similar laws. Environmental groups also worry about bill language that they contend would block states and localities from regulating natural claims on food labels and approving other kinds of laws related to GMOs.
To keep the GMO labeling debate in perspective, it’s important to note that the weight of scientific evidence to date shows that GMOs in foods haven’t harmed human health.
Most of the U.S. corn, soybeans, canola and sugar beet crops are grown from GMO seeds, which can vastly improve crop yields. It would also set up a voluntary federal program for manufacturers to certify foods that dont contain GMOs. With this cost, Zinke and 274 other men, inclusive of Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., said they’ve no power to comprehend GMOs.
Among those lawmakers are Reps. Organic foods would be automatically certified, since they are already required to be free of engineered ingredients.
