The Highway Patrol said Kania was driving his Jeep Wrangler northbound in the southbound lanes when he slammed into a Suzuki sedan driven by Felecia Harris, 49, of Charlotte.
Nieman announced other felony charges against Kania.
Chandler Michael Kania, 20, faces a litany of charges, second-degree murder chiefly among them, for a auto crash early Sunday morning that left three dead.
Assistant District Attorney Jeff Nieman repeated these phrases, “the allegation is that he did unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously, with malice aforethought kill and murder” the opposite two victims who died in the crash – 46-year-old Darlene McGee and six-year-old Jahnice Baird.
Jahnia King, 9, who was in the back of Harris’ vehicle, was in good condition Tuesday at UNC Hospitals.
The Highway Patrol said Thursday it filed an application with the Orange County Superior Court to release records for Kania’s credit history in order to investigate where he possibly purchased alcohol on Saturday through Sunday.
Kania handed troopers the driver’s license of someone else, that said he was 21, Nieman said, adding that Kania didn’t have his own driver’s license at the time but had a fraternity ID with his real name. The family has been cooperating with authorities, Woodall said. It was an effort which ended in a physical altercation, with one person being knocked to the ground. Woodall told a judge Thursday that Kania’s friends had tried to talk him out of driving that night. A 9-year-old suffered serious injuries.
Nieman called Kania a danger to himself and others as well as a flight risk and asked the judge to set the bond at $1.5 million.
Kania’s attorney was not present at the hearing and a court review to ensure he has legal counsel is scheduled to take place on Monday.
Kania’s mother sobbed in the courtroom as Nieman described the case against him, reports the station.
“The Kania family is absolutely devastated about this tragedy”.
If Kania posts bond, the judge ordered that he remain under electronic monitoring and not leave his home between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
