Small town Pirongia in Waikato region was scared by sudden illness of kauri trees. These trees are one of main New Zealand’ treasures that grow on the North Island during centuries. Authorities are trying to stop dieback disease of kauri trees till it will be spread across Waikato region.
The tree with bad symptoms was found on the private land, in a Waikato district, at Pirongia. The holder of land saw ill kauri tree, and thought about pathogen that can spread death among trees.
Kim Parker, the manager in project of saving kauri says that after landowner asked for their help they were able to save a tree.
Specialists check the tree and it was clean. However, they ask people to pay attention to such situations and call them for advice or help.
Kim says that farmer was really concerned about tree and specialists reacted very fast.
Manager asks publicity to cooperate with their organization for stopping death of kauri trees. Dying off kauri trees is a national problem. There are five known sites at Coromandel where disease is present but taken under control. Till disease will not be stopped completely, there is always a possibility of spreading into other places.
Parker believes that the best option for now is to separate healthy trees from ill, as there is no cure from it.
Farmers can spread disease by moving infected soil from one area to another on boots, wheels, camping equipment etc.
Kauri usually grows on the land from Kawhia to Tauranga, 38 degrees south.
