Explosion at eastern China chemical plant kills 1

The blast happened Saturday night at the Runxing Chemical factory in Zibo in Shandong province, according to state media.



The report gave no details of the identity of the person killed.

In the wake of the explosions, more than 100 chemical companies across seven provinces were told to shut down or suspend operations because of safety violations, Reuters reported.

The blast shattered windows in homes less than a mile away and sent shock waves that could be felt for at least three miles.

As of Sunday the toll from the blast was one dead and nine injured. Adiponitrile is used to make nylon and other products.
