Ex-Fiorentina midfielder Alberto Aquilani joins Sporting CP

Italian global midfielder Alberto Aquilani left Fiorentina on Thursday and signed a three-year deal with Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese club revealed on Facebook.

Aquilani, an Italy global, had been without a club since his contract in Florence came to an end in June and was reportedly in talks with several other sides before Sporting moved quickly to snap him up.

But the Italian soon struggled in England and was shipped out by Liverpool on successive loan stints, first to Juventus and then AC Milan.

He insists that he has no regrets over joining Liverpool and said: “I would do it all over again. If I could go back in time, maybe I would have done things a little differently contractually”. Despite being 31-years-old, the former Liverpool man has bagged himself a three-year contract with a €45m release clause (yeah, think you’re safe there, Sporting).

“The American league’s aim is to expand and MLS could be an interesting option for Aquilani, but it’s one for the future”.
