Evan Mathis to visit Seahawks (unless he signs elsewhere first)

Mathis is now scheduled to visit the Seahawks on Saturday after the team returns home from its second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night.

The trip had been in doubt as Mathis waited on an unknown team’s offer, but he is unlikely to reach an agreement before Saturday, Rapoport reported.

Seattle has other thoughts as to why landing Mathis is a long shot for the Seahawks. Philadelphia recently released Mathis at his request, according to Eagles coach Chip Kelly.

Mathis, 33, has made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons and in 2013 was a first-team All-Pro. Mathis supposedly wants a salary commensurate with the $5.1 million base pay he would have gotten from the Eagles this season, which makes sense for him but may not for his suitors. The right guard has remained J.R. Sweezy, the starter there for the last few seasons. The Seahawks new line, including 2014 practice-squad guard Drew Nowak starting at center and former college tight end Garry Gilliam at right tackle, improved over last weeks exhibition opener by allowing only two sacks Friday.

The only way the Seahawks would be able to afford the guard is if they release a player to make cap space.

After trading away Unger in the off-season the Seahawks team is missing a true anchor on the o-line and Mathis seems to be the flawless match.

Seattle has very little cap room left for 2015 and still has Kam Chancellor’s holdout to worry about. I would be surprised with after signing Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner that we even have enough money to sign a undrafted free agent yet alone Evan Mathis!

Obviously, that’s not ideal, but it’s worth it if Mathis is the piece that pushes this year’s team over the top. He would be a fantastic pick-up for the Seattle Seahawks’ struggling offensive line.
