Evacuated As Pine Fire Near Wrightwood Grows To 200 Acres

Another five campgrounds in the Wrightwood area were to be evacuated this morning, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Firefighters plan their attack of the Pine Fire at the command post at Mountain High Ski Resort in Wrightwood on Saturday.

David Cruz, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, says the fire began late Friday and spread to at least 25 acres of timber. LASD also reported around 5 a.m. that the fire was about 10 percent contained.

As many as 300 other people, including 130 deaf and hearing-impaired children, were being evacuated from Table Mountain and Lion’s campgrounds, according to a tweet from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The Pine Fire was first reported around 9 p.m. Friday and had burned around 200 acres near Flume Canyon, off of Highway 2, by 8 a.m.

The incident commander requested the closure of Angeles Crest from Wrightwood to Big Pines.

Evacuations were ordered for Camp Care where an estimated 90 Girl Scouts were camping.

Residents may evacuate to Serrano High School, 9292 Sheep Creek Rd., in Phelan. About 150 firefighters were on scene.

“The concern is extremely dry conditions”, Lugo said. But the possible storm brings with it a potential for lighting strikes, which could spark new wildfires.
