Greece has been struggling to deal with the influx of refugees and migrants arriving on its shores, as underfunded refugee camps and aid service points have been overflowing with people. My final destination is probably Germany. But Greece and Italy, the countries receiving the most refugees, doubt their ability to handle the sheer number of people arriving at their doorsteps.



Separately, police arrested six suspected smugglers in northern Greece after finding 103 migrants or refugees, including 19 children, hidden in a truck heading from the Turkish border area to the main northern city of Thessaloniki, authorities said.

France is trying to speed up the process for seeking asylum and to better welcome refugees, as the numbers coming to Europe this year have soared. The migrants had thrown stones at officers, a police source said.

Other trains brought migrants to Hamburg in the north and Dortmund in the west of the country, while more than 300 people traveled to the capital Berlin on specially chartered buses.

Police on Tuesday marked arms after they detained more than 200 people, mostly Syrians, in Breclav who arrived on trains from Hungary and Austria in Germany-bound trains.

More than 13,000 people have been moved to the Greek mainland from the islands since last Monday, the country’s coastguard said, including a ferry of 2,500 on Saturday alone. The fact that Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina resigned Thursday amid a growing corruption scandal, and that thousands of Guatemalans were among those who arrived in Texas previous year, are far from coincidental. While other countries gradually step up to help, the global Rescue Committee is on the front lines, assisting Syrians attain refugee status and providing them with basic necessities.

On 3 September, Greek government ministers met in Athens to discuss the ongoing response to the refugee crisis on the Aegean islands.

The island of Lesvos receives half of the refugees and migrants, followed by Samos (26 per cent), Kos (14 per cent) and Chios, Leros and other smaller islands, local government figures suggest.

Former Czech President Vaclav Klaus, a renowned Euro-skeptic, has launched an “Against Immigration” petition which calls “mass immigration a fundamental threat for the stability of Europe and individual European Union member states”.

The European officials took part in a meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou and four ministers in order to set up a coordinating center in Piraeus to accelerate the management of the migration flow.
