Oregon running back Thomas Tyner is out for fall camp and he could miss the season after shoulder surgery. Tyner sustained an injury to his shoulder last season, with the lingering pain and discomfort over the last several months leading to the procedure.
Thomas Tyner will likely forgo his Junior season and have two years of eligbility remaining starting with the 2016 season.
Teams are limited to 105 players on the roster prior to the first game of the season, and the Ducks listed 103 as of Monday. He attempted to avoid an operation but ultimately couldn’t.
Oregon Ducks fans got some bad news on the eve of fall camp for the defending Rose Bowl Champions.
Tyner, a former five-star prospect and the No. 2 overall running back for the class of 2013, has rushed for 1,284 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and 14 touchdowns in his two-year career with Oregon. He was expected to be an important piece of Oregon’s offense again in 2015 along with running back Royce Freeman.
Tyner ran for 573 yards as a sophomore in 2014. Tyner is expected to redshirt and return in 2016. But while he’s sidelined, Oregon has the depth of talent at running back to overcome his loss and continue to be a contender in the Pac-12. Griffin is a compact, 6-foot, 205-pound athlete who played option quarterback at Georgia Tech before transferring to UO last offseason and redshirting the 2014 season. Without further clarification from the coaching staff, the mind will wander, and for many that has led to: “Was this surgery that could have done immediately following the season?” He caught 74 passes for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns.
