Singapore Grand Prix victor Sebastian Vettel has called the man who walked onto the track during the Formula 1 race “crazy”.

Vettel, who was the first to see him, shouted over the team radio “there is a man on the track!” and the safety auto was immediately deployed.

Vettel’s win was the German’s third this season and the 42nd of his career, enabling the quadruple world champion to overtake the late Ayrton Senna into outright third place for the most lifetime wins, trailing only Michael Schumacher (91) and Alain Prost (51).

While he still enjoys a healthy lead in the standings, any more gremlins in the remaining six races could bring Rosberg and Vettel right back into the title race.

Hamilton had won seven of the 12 races before Singapore and been on pole 11 times. Today I knew it was not going to be easy: it was a tricky race, on new tires I was able to follow Daniel easily, but then I was starting to have the same problems as yesterday, and I did not have enough speed for trying to catch him.

A crash in the opening stages between Felipe Massa and Nico Hulkenberg frustrated the Australian to begin with.

Lewis Hamilton has bemoaned his luck after a power unit failure forced him to retire halfway through the Singapore GP.

Hamilton heads into Sunday’s showdown holding a 53-point lead over his nearest challenger Rosberg in the drivers’ championship table.

Earlier this year, a spectator – one of only 836 – at the Shanghai worldwide Circuit for Friday practice, ran across the track in the belief that access to trackside was included in the price of his ticket.

“Of course there is the small positive of closing the gap but the big one is that it has been such a disappointing weekend for all of us”.

When asked if the safety auto ended his hopes of victory, Ricciardo said: “I think that dictated the race, really”.

“If there was no safety vehicle we could have been close for the undercut but the two safety cars came at pretty crucial times”, Ricciardo said.

“The goal for the championship is maximum attack, we have to go for everything we can get”.

Valtteri Bottas was fifth for Williams, Daniil Kvyat sixth, the Force India of Sergio Perez seventh ahead of Verstappen, with Carlos Sainz and the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson completing the points places. “On the other hand you cannot say we are terrified now; then you go into panic mode and that would be inappropriate and wrong”.
