Two dogs are dead and 13 others are missing following a break-in at the Riverside County Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley.
Locks at the shelter located at 6851 Van Buren Boulevard were broken, and dogs appeared to have been released out of kennel runs on goal, Welsh said.
The animals will be examined by veterinarians to determine a cause of death. Welsh said at least two dogs were killed, but officials were unsure if the dogs were killed by the trespasser or if they were attacked by the larger dogs, which had been let loose. At midmorning, 13 dogs were missing or unaccounted for from the shelter’s current inventory of animals. “There were some blood markings that were about three feet off the ground”, Welsh said.
According to ktla.com, upon arrival on Sunday morning, staff members who clean, feed and water the dogs found several dogs wandering the hallway. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is reviewing surveillance video which revealed a single man in dark clothing inside of the shelter. “Sometimes, someone might want to break in to get their dog out without having to pay impound fees or fines, but I don’t recall anything like this”.
