Didier Drogba Offered MLS contract

The report states that the Ivory Coast worldwide is set to sign for the Men in Red if he can agree terms with the MSL.

It is believed that several teams within the MLS are in the hunt to land Drogba, with the Chicago Fire now in pole position to seal the deal.

Major League Soccer is aiming to bring another big name into the league as they have offered Didier Drogba a contract, according to ESPN FC.

An unnamed source told ESPN the contract was for 18 months and worth $2.5 million per season.

The link between the player and MLS was first reported by the Daily Mail earlier this week.

Drogba, 37, started eight games for Chelsea during the 2014-15 Premier League season and scored four goals in league play.

Drogba was vital to Chelsea’s title run previous year, despite posting vastly underwhelming numbers.

Drogba has been a free agent since his contract with the English Premier League champions expired.

Despite already occupying their three allotted Designated Player slots with Shaun Maloney, David Accam ($721,000) and Kennedy Igboananike ($902,000), the Men in Red could procure Drogba via the new Targeted Allocation Money mechanism by buying down the salary of – perhaps more feasibly – either Accam or Igboananike.

At global level, Drogba is the Ivory Coast’s all-time leading scorer with 65 goals, and his 104 appearances rank third behind Kolo Toure’s 108 and Didier Zokora’s 123.
