Chelsea are reported to be lining up a surprise move for Tottenham full-back Danny Rose before the transfer window closes.
The Blues are looking for a quality left-back this summer after letting Filipe Luis return to Atletico Madrid last week.
Even if a deal was agreed, I’d also question the logic of Rose moving to Chelsea as he wouldn’t be first choice under Mourinho and would simply play back-up to Cesar Azpilicueta.
Rose is now fifth in England’s left-back pecking order, behind Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and Everton’s Leighton Baines.
The West London outfit have been strongly linked with a move for Augsburg’s left-back Baba Rahman, with Metro reporting yesterday that the Ghana global was set for a medical with the Blues.
The 21-year-old left-back is being valued at €25 million (£17.6 million) by Augsburg, per German outlet Kicker (h/t Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC).
Rose would boost the champions’ quota of homegrown players – something which is proving a concern to the club hierarchy.
Chelsea made enquiries about Rose this weekend and now want an asking price from White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy.
Arguably Rahman is the player with the greater potential, but Rose seems to be the main target for Mourinho ahead of the champions’ league opener against Swansea City on Saturday.
