Cotton Accuses Kerry Of Acting ‘Like Pontius Pilate’

The Tennessee Republican said he and ranking Democrat Ben Cardin of Maryland wrote to request the missing documents, which he said deal with an Iranian military facility at Parchin and a side agreement Iran reached with the global Atomic Energy Agency.

One of the agreements lays out specific steps the IAEA wants Iran to take to help answer its longstanding questions over Iran’s suspected past military work. The side agreements in question are “IAEA documents” that are not part of the formal agreement, the spokesman told reporters. Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton has said that “John Kerry acted like Pontius Pilate, he washed his hands” on crucial issues in the Iran deal and left it to the IAEA to negotiate secret side deals with Iran on them.

“Our experts are familiar and comfortable with the content which we would be happy to discuss with Congress in a classified setting”, he noted.

In an interview with an Iranian news channel on July 21, Ali Akbar Salehi said the understanding reached with the IAEA was “political”.

But why doesn’t the Obama administration have a copy of the IAEA agreement on the chain of custody for the fissile material that will be moved out of Iran’s program?

Earnest acknowledged that information regarding the Iran-IAEA pacts was not provided to lawmakers Wednesday during classified briefings for House and Senate members held by Secretary of State John Kerry, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.

White House National Security Adviser Susan Rice echoed Kirby’s comments that all Iran deal documents were given to Congress.

The main agreement is the equivalent of a large bureaucratic press release with many of its most important details shifted over to side agreements governing what the IAEA will actually do. It has not distributed these sensitive documents, nor do we expect it to do so. The IAEA’s approach on this issue has been standard in past cases, including cases involving sensitive nuclear activities.

“According to the IAEA, the Iran agreement negotiators, including the Obama administration, agreed that the IAEA and Iran would forge separate arrangements to govern the inspection of the Parchin military complex”, Pompeo’s office said.

That’s expected October. 15 – past the 60-day review period for Congress to approve or shoot down the nuclear deal. Again, the Parchin military site is where they’ve tested detonators for nuclear weapons.

“The agency conveyed to the lawmakers that two side deals made between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the IAEA as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will remain secret and will not be shared with other nations, with Congress, or with the public“, the lawmakers said in a statement.

Not providing access to the side deals violates the law and indicates the administration is “asking Congress to agree to a deal that it cannot review”.
