The craft landed on the course at Richmond County Country Club around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
A man was “ejected into the water” and hurt when the boat – which did not have a name – hit the bridge, the Coast Guard said.
The U.S. Coast Guard released footage of an unidentified 45-year-old man being lifted onto a medical helicopter early Sunday morning. There was a female passenger on board who was not injured.
“The incredible teamwork and coordination between multiple Coast Guard assets and the Maersk Wesport proved vital in locating and medevac-ing the survivor despite intense thunderstorms and darkness”, the helicopter’s pilot Tamara Whalen said in a statement.
He was thrown a life preserver and soon hoisted from the water.
The Coast Guard advised the boating public to stay clear of the area while the oil is being removed from the water.
The Coast Guard’s pollution response team, including a helicopter crew, went to the site to investigate. EMS was waiting at the ramp and evaluated the man’s injuries before transporting him to Carteret General hospital.
He says it’s uncommon for boats to strike the bottom of bridges like this.
