Cablevision will offer CBS’ video streaming services to broadband customers

In a new multi-year agreement announced Tuesday, the Bethpage, N.Y., company will offer CBS’ standalone video streaming services for its premium cable channel Showtime and its broadcast network (CBS All Access).

Cablevision seems to understand that cord cutting isn’t a fad.

The deal includes retransmission consent for CBS-owned stations and continued carriage of SHOWTIME, CBS Sports Network and Smithsonian channel.

“This comprehensive new agreement builds on our strong relationship with CBS and ensures that every Optimum customer gets the highly popular CBS content they want across multiple platforms and screens”, said Tom Montemagno, EVPt, programming, Cablevision. And in April, it became the first pay TV provider to distribute Hulu to its broadband customers.

Internet TV streaming is only getting bigger. Cablevision, on the other hand, is simply becoming a reseller of over-the-top streaming services, including as of this March, HBO NOW.

However, while the distribution of CBS’s OTT products is another data point in Cablevision’s broadband-first strategy, it’s not clear how much value the new deal will deliver to consumers. The service is already available online and through streaming devices such Roku and Apple TV, but Cablevision is the first cable provider to market the service to its customers.

Now the company has struck a deal with CBS to offer the broadcaster’s streaming video service as part of a new carriage arrangement with the company.

The two companies didn’t announce pricing for this service.

Cablevision broadband customers will be able to stream CBS and Showtime over the internet without having a pay for a TV subscription.
