U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice issued a statement Saturday congratulating the people of Burkina Faso “for their success in defending Burkinabe democracy and reinstating the transitional government”.

The government has also frozen the assets of Diendere and 13 others suspected of ties to the coup or political parties linked to Burkina Faso’s former president Blaise Compaore.

Kafando was re-instated in a ceremony on Wednesday.

Compaore was ousted in a popular uprising last October, as he tried to extend his 27 years in office. Its members mounted the coup, unhappy that Compaore supporters were barred from running in elections.

The RSP was also concerned about its future, having already called for the interim prime minister to resign over plans to reduce its size and pay.

“The government invites the populations to remain calm and exert restraint”, the government said in a statement late Saturday.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Diendere said the RSP soldiers had not received the protections they initially were promised.

The peace deal brokered by the Ecowas regional bloc is “at an impasse” the chief of army staff said, denouncing the powerful RSP unit of guards for “refusing to follow the disarmament by creating incidents and attacking personnel charged with this mission”. We have as priority the security of the country and the people through the restart of the administration. Premier Zida has said the general will face justice over his actions.

The disarmament effort began Friday, the day Burkina Faso’s leaders officially disbanded the guard.

The upcoming election has been delayed for several weeks, but it remains to be seen whether key RSP demands, including the lifting of an electoral ban on Compaore’s allies, will be fulfilled.

Transitional President Michel Kafando announced the disbandment of the elite group of soldiers late Friday.
