He is the Vols’ first commitment for 2017.
The Indiana native is the only 2017 commit for the Volunteers at the moment, but Inside Tennessee’s Danny Parker said he is a game changer for recruiting.
The Vols picked up what may be their biggest “brick” to date on Sunday afternoon when Hunter Johnson, the No. 1 QB in the 2017 class, committed to the Vols.
“When you compare him to other 2017 kids, nobody throws the football like him”, 247sports national analyst Steve Wiltfong said.
The 6-3, 195-pound quarterback passed for 1,434 yards and 10 touchdowns last season as a sophomore at Brownsburg. Johnson is incredibly accurate in roll-out situations (to either side of the field), but has plenty of arm strength to deliver accurate passes deep down the field from the pocket.
With Johnson’s commitment, Tennessee continues to cultivate talent at the quarterback position. In fact, it may be the biggest news Jones and his staff have received since being at Tennessee. He was down here back in July for the Orange Carpet Day event and one thing leads to another. Jennings switched to wide receiver at the beginning of camp, so he only has three weeks of experience, but so far he has well exceeded expectations.
Regardless of your ranking service of choice, Johnson is one of the best players in the 2017 cycle and held offers from numerous top programs in the nation, including Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and over a dozen other schools. I trust Coach Jones and the rest of the coaches there, and I feel like I will be very happy there.
Hunter Johnson is just a junior in high school, so don’t be surprised if his recruitment takes some twists and turns along the way.
