“I can’t shut the door on them and say, “No offshore and no mining”.

Below is a list of three things that the president did while traveling to Alaska.

While the official name of the peak has been Mount McKinley for over 100 years, it has been widely referred to as Denali by Alaskans for decades.

Yet Denali, roughly translated “the tall one”, is a name worthy of the 20,237-foot-tall mountain, a sign of respect to the Koyukon Athabaskan people who live around the mountain. “Presumably because Obama has now solved all the world’s problems and decided against his second choice, Mount Trayvon”.

Obama is on a historic three-day trip to Alaska aimed at showing solidarity with a state often overlooked by Washington, while using its glorious but changing landscape as an urgent call to action on climate change. As for the jab about renaming Mt. McKinley, we already covered the fact that, um, he didn’t.

The President pledged to boost the capabilities of the Denali Commission, an independent federal agency established in 1998, by requesting that next year’s budget puts aside $14m to coordinate projects to build climate resilience in the state.

Fast forward to August. 30, 2015, and the announcement from Interior Secretary Sally Jewell that henceforth the highest mountain in North America, formerly known as Mount McKinley, will be officially given the traditional Koyukon Athabascan name of Denali. Obama was holding the salmon in the bay at Kanakanak Beach in the isolated fishing village of Dillingham, Alaska. The change has pushed some residents to abandon their homes.

With his emphasis on visuals over policy proposals, Obama seemed to signal that he’s shifting into a different part of his presidency that centers more on elevating issues he believes are important and executing initiatives he’s already started.

“It’s urgent for them today”, he continued.

“We respect the freedom of all nations to operate military vessels in global waters in accordance with worldwide law”, said Navy Cdr.

Most people in Alaska don’t mind the change, either.

Obama called out: “Did you see that?”

Obama said Saturday that he looked forward to meeting with Alaskans to talk about how the country can be the “global leader on climate change” and help a collective effort to meet the threat before it is too late.

Palin, a tea party firebrand who unsuccessfully campaigned for the vice presidency, also slammed Obama for not checking out the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, which according to a NASA report is expanding.
