Brendan Rodgers: ‘Jordan Henderson struggling with foot injury’

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was left fuming from his sides 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, claiming that Christian Bentekes winning goal was clearly offside and that throughout the match the big decisions went against them.

The Premier League issued new rules regarding the offside rule before the start to the season, stating that any player who makes a play towards the ball, even if they don’t go onto touch it, is deemed offside.

The Liverpool goalkeeper will at times probably try long balls to him as well, so our defence will have to watch him.

Rodgers said of the decisions, according to the Liverpool Echo: “I haven’t seen either of them again, we obviously had a good period of pressure leading up to the goal”.

“We were sat out in front of the referees (before the season) and told about the new rules”.

The Belgian striker netted the victor from close range in the first-half, but the Cherries will feel that Philippe Coutinho should have been flagged offside in the build-up to the goal.

Rodgers said: “I think they’re an excellent team”.

‘I’m very happy to have scored tonight and helped the team take three points.

“You saw it with one moment when a cross came in and he set up a chance for Coutinho, and in my time here we’ve never had that before – it would always be cleared”. I don’t think it’s a tough one with the new rules.

“I’m pleased we’ve got two wins, six points and two clean sheets”.

Henderson, Steven Gerrard’s successor as skipper, grazed the bar with an improvised shot from distance and was then unfortunate not to win a penalty for a barge by Max-Alain Gradel, while Coutinho curled a loose ball wastefully wide.

That decision compounded Bournemouth’s frustration after the Elphick incident in the fifth minute.

“That will really help and once the players get used to seeing and working with that, it’ll offer us more opportunities to score goals”.

Howe nonetheless took heart from the courage shown by his players and said that the performance would give his side “confidence that we can succeed at this level”. When the ball comes into the box he is a real threat and handful. “Two big decisions have gone against us”.
