The report says the performance oriented quad-turbo diesel will see its debut in the new 7 Series M750d in 2016, because the existing tri-turbo diesel setup isn’t complex or mad enough. According to Bimmertoday, there may soon be another awesome diesel that we’ll miss in the form of a quad-turbo version of the aforementioned tri-turbo 3.0-liter.
BMW hasn’t released any numbers for the engine, which will be designated the B57 TOP, but it isn’t too likely that it will offer a huge horsepower advantage over the current tri-turbo configuration. It is also possible that BMW has simply just added a fourth conventional, gas-driven turbocharger.
Compared with the Tri-turbo concept, using four turbochargers should allow an even faster response, an even broader powerband and of course an increase in power and torque. In detail, the diesel unit is going to be built with not one or two but a whopping four turbochargers.
Exact specifications remain unknown, but the output figures could be in the ball park of over 400 BHP and 800 Nm of torque, with the grunt driving all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system.
If BMW history is an indication, then the B57 TOP will arrive in future models as well, like the G30 M550d, X5 M5d0, X6 M50d and X7 M50d.
