Google Now on Tap is slated to roll out with Marshmallow this fall, but it looks like Microsoft may have beaten Google to the punch with the feature.
The same source claims that Samsung will start working on Android 6.0 Marshmallow as soon as it gets the final build from Google, and after the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop rollout is complete. Bing will “read the contents” of any in-app screen and present additional relevant information once invoked.
“Along with the new platform features like fingerprint support and Doze power saving mode, Android Marshmallow features a new permissions model that streamlines the app install and update process”, saidJamal Eason, Android Product Manager.
Developers can innovate using this enormous asset to fulfill their users’ information needs and help users perform searches in context, instead of forcing users to leave their apps to perform searches. There will be no charge to use the API for development and testing, and production deployments are available through a license, Microsoft search general manager Ryan Gavin told VentureBeat in an interview. Then again, the tech giant cautioned users in their blog post that the preview images are still not fit to be installed for ordinary users and would therefore not recommend to have the operating system be installed just yet. According to a Venture Beat report earlier today, the move is meant to set the service apart from Google, with the new Bing knowledge and action graph API. Millions of Bing users around the globe use this rich information every day, in bing.com, Cortana, Xbox, Office and more.
“Apple also paid out more than $10 billion to developers past year compared with Google’s $7 billion, another indication that market share isn’t everything”. Though Google announced this enhancement at its I/O Developer Conference back in May, Bing was first to actually make such a feature available to consumers.
Google has lead the search engine market since forever, and it doesn’t seem in danger of losing the spot on its lofty perch.
