Through the years, Cosby has been awarded honorary degrees by 23 colleges and universities, according to the Daily Beast.
Fordham University is the latest in a line of institutions that want to end their affiliation with Cosby.
As the president and provost of Marquette University, we are writing to inform you that earlier today, we presented a resolution to the Board of Trustees to rescind the honorary degree granted to Bill Cosby in 2013.
It’s the first time the school has ever revoked an honorary degree.
“The University has taken this extraordinary step in light of Mr. Cosby’s now-public court depositions that confirm numerous allegations made against him”, the university said in a statement to students.
Bill Cosby had his honorary doctorate from Fordham University revoked on Thursday after president Joseph McShane and fellow school board members unanimously agreed to invalidate the degree in light of the recent rape allegations.
The two Jesuit schools announced the actions Thursday.
Cosby has been accused of sexual assault by more than 50 women. Cosby has never been charged with any sex crime. The decision followed a unanimous vote by Fordham’s board of trustees, signaling to the world that Cosby’s new criminal reputation is capable of supplanting his once celebrated one.
That would be the deposition from the lawsuit filed by Cosby accuser Andrea Constand.
Cosby was bestowed the honorarium back in 2001 for “the significant role he played in breaking the color barrier in American television and popular culture, and his position as an inspirational figure for millions of African Americans”.
“That Mr. Cosby was willing to drug and rape women for his sexual gratification, and further damage those same women’s reputations and careers to obscure his guilt, hurt not only his victims, but all women, and is beyond the pale“, read the letter.
