Bike-surfer: Aussie daredevil rides on water in Tahiti

The bike took two years to make, said Maddison.

Now, you’d think that, after this jaw-dropping display of deftness, Robbie Maddison would be done with motorbiking. Maddison, who is no stranger to stunts that are wilder than your imaginations, rode his dirt bike on the powerful waves off the coast of Tahiti.

The bike received a rear tire for tackling the sand or volcanic ash dunes, alongside skis that help keeping the bike afloat. But this was something different; aside from its recognition as having the world’s heaviest reef breaking waves, Teahupo’o is also one of the most risky surfing spots on the planet, with five recorded deaths since 2000. Attached to the bike seems to be a set of skis that lets ol’Maddo here take on the famous waves of Teahupoo and Papara in Tahiti.

The thing that sticks with me the most after that whole experience was how physically demanding it was. “It was a near-death experience”, he added.

It’s safe to say that Maddison has the guts and courage to experiment and try things that the majority of the population does not.

“I honestly thought that might be the end of my life”, said the 34-year-old Maddison.

In an incredible video, Maddison was able to skim the Tahitian waters. The result is a bike that, to the outside observer, appears to actually be skimming across the top of the water like a jet ski. In 2012, Maddison served as a stunt double for actor Daniel Draig in the James Bond film Skyfall. But Robbie Maddison can ride on it.

The daredevil told Surfer Magazinethat he got the idea while watching his wife wakeboard, “something clicked in my head. This dream is about combining two of my life’s passions in order to do something that has never been attempted”. Robbie told a magazine that the images and footage are pretty awesome but there are no words to describe the ferocity of the waves.
