Bentley is claiming that its upcoming Bentayga is the world’s fastest SUV, having gone 187 miles per hour in high-speed testing. The top speed outlined today is an effort to set the Bentayga apart as luxury-car producers add SUVs, inspired by VW’s Porsche sports-car brand turning the Cayenne model into its best-selling vehicle.
Bentley Motors released a YouTube video of the Bentayga hitting a ridiculous 301kmh, which in old money is 187mph.
But then again, there’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee Track Hawk around the corner and that will be packing 707 hp from a Hellcat engine, meaning Bentley has its work cut out if it wants to keep the title of the world’s most powerful SUV.
Those who remember back to 2012 might have a noticed a it looks like the EXP 9 F concept, which is what the Bentayga is based on. The Audi Q7-based Bentley SUV is programmed to go on sale next year and will receive a plug-in hybrid version sometime in 2017. The big Brit will pack the Volkswagen Group’s latest W-12 engine, which, thanks to twin-turbocharging and direct-injection technologies delivers in excess of 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. We should have more details soon as the Frankfurt Auto Show gets underway September 15.
