Around 98 passengers were rescued from the boat, with more able to swim to the Greek island of Farmakonisi in the south-eastern Aegean Sea.

It’s the latest tragic incident as migrants and refugees fleeing war and unrest in Syria and other countries seek protection in Europe.

In another instance of the perils facing the refugees on their trek, Austrian police said on Sunday they had rescued 42 people from a refrigerated truck on a highway near the border to Germany. All of them were in good health, did not require any medical attention and were transported to a refugee detention center in the city of Linz, Innerdorfer said.

Four thousand German soldiers are on standby to help manage the refugee situation if needed, a Defense Ministry spokesman said. “That doesn’t exist anywhere in the world”, Thomas de Maiziere told the German daily newspaper Tagesspiegel, adding that that refugees must accept being distributed around the European Union in exchange for protection.

More than 2,700 people have perished in the sea during their attempt in the Mediterranean this year.

Interim Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou today branded criticism of Greece, which has been on the frontline of the surge of migrants trying to reach Europe, as “unacceptable”.
