“The other really important thing to remember is there are several active wildfires burning in the Kamloops Fire Centre, so be very careful when you’re travelling through active wildfire areas and be cognisant of people operating in those areas”.
But by Monday, high winds had kicked up, fanning the embers of the Sunday fire.
Fire incident commander Glen Burgess said despite the fact the fire is growing, progress has been made.
Airtankers and bucketing helicopters supported BC Wildfire Service crews on the ground, and control lines established during this flare up are holding.
“Crews worked on site overnight to extinguish hot spots in the subdivision and despite downslope winds and aggressive fire behaviour, they were able to protect any structures from loss in the Shelter Cove area”, Winter told Vancity Buzz.
Electricity was cut to 1,400 homes as flames consumed power poles. However, it will provide 900 of them with six hours of power, on a rotating basis from a different circuit. This rotation will continue until BC Hydro can make repairs to the system.
“Today on-site, we have 60 firefighters as well as four helicopters, heavy equipment and tankers and skimmers again”. Both the City of Kelowna and City of West Kelowna are located well away from the actual fire scene.
That fire, discovered Monday, was 300 hectares at the last report, and it’s sparked an evacuation order affecting 24 properties, including Bolean Lake Resort.
The BC Wildfire Service thanks the public for its ongoing support in reporting wildfires.
