German automaker Audi has announced its plan to present a new electric concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show, taking place from September 17-27.
Audi said the e-tron quattro is “designed from the ground up as an electric auto”, and isn’t just an existing model with a large battery stuffed underneath. Audi says the vehicle has movable aerodynamic elements all around, with a fully closed-off underbody that helps it achieve a 0.25 coefficient of drag, a claimed record in the SUV segment.
Audi is working on an electric SUV that will challenge Tesla Motors’ [NSDQ:TSLA] Model X when it arrives on the market in 2018. Audi placed the battery pack between the axles, right underneath the passenger compartment to help give the SUV a low center of gravity and decent balance.
According to commentators, the preview, called the E-tron Quattro concept, would show off research and development going toward a new pure-electric SUV.
Audi might have most of the details sorted out but, as it turns out, it will be a while before the all-electric SUV moves from being merely a concept ride to making its proper debut. Also found on the concept are three electrics two of which drive the rear axle while one drives the front.
Tesla, run by Elon Musk, is gaining traction with an increasing number of people, and poses a growing threat to larger luxury-car brands like Audi. It’s pretty much your first look at the upcoming 2019 Audi Q6 crossover SUV-type thing. However, the A3 e-tron uses plug-in hybrid electric technology, combining a 1.4L TFSI 4-cyl. engine with a 75-kW (100-hp) electric motor for a total output of 204 hp. The second Model X SUV will start shipping soon.
“Originally known under the internal codename of ‘C-BEV, ‘ the existence of the concept was first hinted at during Audi’s 2015 annual accounts press conference in April”, AutoCar said.
