The Giants’ interest in Chancellor nearly goes without saying as right now the team’s safety depth looks like something out of a 1980s horror film.

Safety has become a black hole for the Giants, as Raanan noted the team missed out on free agent Devin McCourty. Chancellor isn’t just an elite safety, but he’s also one of the Seahawks’ locker room leaders.

He’s an incredibly impressive player because he can essentially do everything.

Chancellor, 27, represents an obvious upgrade over all those options, a three-time Pro Bowler in his prime, but he will not come cheap. He would add a lot of leadership to a rather inexperienced unit, and he’s the flawless player for Collins to learn from. Chancellor has made it clear this offseason he wants a new contract, and is planning to continue his holdout into the regular season if he doesn’t get his wish.

The price to acquire Chancellor is going to be steep, and that might scare the Giants. Some have even mentioned adding a year to his contract. To put it into perspective, Seattle surrendered a first-round pick and a starting center to nab Jimmy Graham from the Saints.

A move to bring Chancellor to New York would obviously be a move of the “win-now” variety.

It still seems fairly likely that the Seahawks will be able to work out an agreement with Chancellor sooner or later. New York cut Steve Weatherford, Henry Hynoski and Jameel McClain. The Giants have had plenty of injuries at the position, and with a a lack of stars on the defensive side of the ball, Chancellor quickly could become the nucleus of the team’s defense.

McClain was one of several high-profile cuts for the Giants as the club got down to the 53-man roster limit. According to the story, the Giants “inquired about and expressed serious interest in the availability” of Chancellor.
