According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, sporting director Walter Sabatini has agreed terms with Stuttgart for the defender.

Roma will be hoping to land Stuttgart defender Antonio Rudiger sooner rather than later, as the Serie A season draws closer.

Chelsea could also submit a bid of around £20m for the centre-back in the coming days, but Roma may move more quickly as they seek a replacement for Alessio Romagnoli.

The former, while he did not appear for Roma last term, was set to feature for Rudi Garcia’s side this campaign, but the club simply could not refuse Milan’s lucrative offer of €30 million.

The option works as an insurance for Roma, as the player is recovering from knee surgery and his levels of fitness are not entirely certain yet.

Manager Jose Mourinho is keen on signing the 22-year-old superstar, who has a total of six caps till now for the German national side.

The defender was a member of the Borussia Dortmund youth academy, before joining Stuttgart in 2011.
