“In this day and time where it has become popular to denigrate law enforcement officers, here’s a chance to do something good, to say something great about a great young officer that laid his life down-that literally sacrificed his life to help others”.
Police already were looking for Cannon in connection with a different killing.
A 27-year-old suspect wanted in the shooting of a police officer has been arrested in Louisiana following a 16-hour-long manhunt.
Grover Cannon, 27, is facing two murders charges and a possible death penalty.
Shreveport Police Chief Willie Shaw said the officer did not know the suspect was armed when he entered the house.
Police in northwest Louisiana have identified an officer who was killed and the suspect wanted in his slaying.
The shooting comes at a time of heightened tensions between law enforcement and minority groups after a series of killings of unarmed black men over the past year in confrontations with police and the fatal shooting of numerous officers in the line of duty.
In the past, Cannon has been convicted for stealing, possessing stolen objects and marijuana, fleeing from an officer, misdemeanor battery, trespassing, resisting an officer and felony theft, KTBS stated. “No matter what rock he crawls under, we will find him”.
Grover Cannon (L) is taken into custody Thursday afternoon for the murder of Shreveport Police Officer Thomas LaValley (R) and the attempted murder of another victim in July.
The FBI offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Cannon’s arrest and put his photograph up on digital billboards along Louisiana interstates and highways, spokesman Craig Betzebe said.
“There’s nothing that he can do to stop us from bringing him to justice”, Shaw added. “Our hearts are saddened”, Mayor Ollie Tyler.
The previous night, LaValley allegedly ran into Cannon while responding to a call about a potential prowler at a home.
“I just want my son to turn himself in”, said Ramona Cannon.
“We are most effective when the public we are sworn to protect assists us in our efforts”.
Visitation will follow until 9:00 p.m.
