Rather than being locked to a carrier, it can be reprogrammed to associate with different networks; if a customer decides to switch from, say T-Mobile U.S. to AT&T, that would be a matter of re-associating the SIM between the networks rather than forcing the user to switch the card physically.

The publication claims that carriers AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone are expected to support the new standard.

An embedded SIM that will support multiple operators is a goal of the Groupe Speciale Mobile Assocation (GSMA).
