It is no surprise then, that there have been a number of rumors recently, suggesting that Disney are toying with the idea of bringing us a remake of the classic movie Mary Poppins.
The remake will take place in London 20 years after the original movie, which also starred Dick Van Dyke.
Hathaway responded to the rumors in an interview with ET Online. Anne revealed that she hasn’t been approached to play the part. However, her “The Intern” co-star Robert De Niro has her full vote that she would be the “terrific pick” to play Mary Poppins.
He tells USnews show Entertainment Tonight, “I saw them announce it on television and they mentioned Mary Poppins and I was thinking – I said, “That’s Annie”. According to recent rumors, British actress Emily Blunt has become the frontrunner, with some reports even claiming that she has already been offered the role, although Emily insists that this is not the case at all. “I feel like [Emily Blunt’s] going to get it – she’s British”. When asked if it would be a scary experience for her to replace Andrews, the “Sicario” star replied, “Oh I won’t go there yet, but I think it would be”.
Anne has been given 6/4 odds to land the role by Irish betting agency BoyleSports, but she faces competition from actresses including her friend and The Devil Wears Prada co-star, Emily Blunt.
Director Rob Marshall’s sequel – a live-action musical film – will draw from the works of Mary Poppins author PL Travers to create a new adventure for the magical nanny and the Banks family.
