Four Irish attractions have made it onto a list of the world’s top 500 must-see sights of all time, compiled recently by guidebook specialist Lonely Planet.
To celebrate the release of Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travel List, three of the world’s finest sand sculptors will recreate five sights from around the world on Peter’s Hill in central London this week.
In pole position is the temple complex at Angkor in Cambodia – which LP says “won by a landslide” – followed by Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and Peru’s Machu Picchu.
There is no place however on the list for Derry’s Walls, the Mourne Mountains or Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh.
According to a survey from Trip Advisor, £272.19 is the estimated daily cost of hotel, taxi, meals and visits to tourist attractions for two people in Belfast, making it a more expensive choice than York, Bristol or Aberdeen.

There are some obvious mentions on the list, but also a couple of destinations you’ll need to freshly add to your bucket list.
Looks good, but anyone hoping to hit all 500 is probably best advised leaving it on the coffee table rather than hauling it around in their backpack.
