Alcatel offers up smaller OneTouch Idol 3 for US, Canada

The smaller, 4.7-inch device is set to go on sale Friday in the U.S. and Canada, available for $199.99.

The Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7 is a smaller version of the handset by the same name, but with a 4.7-inch 720p panel in place of the 5.5-inch display found on the regular version.

We got the Idol 3 4.7’s spec rundown when it was first introduced, but that was five months ago, so most of us could probably use a refresher. The smaller Idol 3 looks and feels very similar to its larger sibling – the Idol 3 4.7 has the same 13 and 5 megapixel cameras and front-facing speakers as the 5.5 inch Idol 3 as well as a similar design.

The mini Idol 3 has the same 13-megapixel rear camera, but a less sharp 5-MP selfie shooter than the 8-MP one on its larger brother.

Alcatel hits redial on the OneTouch Idol 3. The new handset will run Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and come with an out of the box update with the Stagefright Google security patch to address the Android vulnerability.

In the US, Motorola has a lock on the budget market thanks to the popular Moto G. We expect this year’s version to sell even better than previous editions of the device, but Alcatel may have something to say about that.

The display is not the only difference in these two phones.

The new model has a 4.7 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel IPS display, 1.5 GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor.

Overall, the Idol 3 4.7 offers plenty of good features in a solid body for just $180, making it seem like a steal.
