Fliers at most airlines are used to having their bags weighed before checking them, however one airline has now announced it will also weigh passengers and their carry-ons before boarding.

In a statement, Uzbekistan Airways said, ‘Please be informed that Uzbekistan Airways airline is carrying out the procedure of pre-flight weighing in order to determine the average weight of passengers with hand luggage.

It’s believed that it will not result in extra charges for overweight passengers, yet it is unclear if overweight passengers could be prevented from boarding flights.

It’s about to become standard procedure for anyone flying with Uzbekistan Airways. It is sometimes used for internal or regional flights by tour operators offering “Silk Road” and central Asia tours.

The Uzbekistani airline said it will take steps to protect the privacy of passengers that is weighs, according to the report. The airline uses smaller aircrafts.

A statement on the Uzbekistan Airlines website said it was introducing the measures as part of the safety requirements of the worldwide Air Transport Association.

In a 2013 interview, Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton told The Associated Press that its “planes are run by weight and not by seat, and travelers should be educated on this important issue”.

‘The weighing record will only contain the corresponding passenger category (i.e. male/ female/ children).

All planes have total weight limits that can not be exceeded for safety reasons.

A spokesperson for the worldwide association, however, did respond, saying it was “not aware” of an IATA rule about weighing passengers and hand luggage prior to the flight.
