After slow begin, Jordan Spieth surges into rivalry at PGA Championship

The leaderboard was as clouded as the sky over Whistling Straits. It howled with Olympian fury.

Matt Jones began the round leading the tournament by two strokes over Day before carding a 1-over 73.

Day is through 14 holes and Jones is through 12. Grace played bogey-free golf to move into a tie for third with Justin Rose. “I’ll go into (it) strictly for the history piece of trying to get my name on a different major“.

Notably absent in the third round was Tiger Woods, who missed the cut for the third consecutive time in a major tournament after posting a 1-over 73 in the second round to put him at 148 for the tournament.

For Day, whose lead might have been larger but for a double-bogey at the 15th where he left a shot in a deep greenside bunker, and Grace and Spieth, it was like déjà vu all over again from the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

The first one starts at 7 a.m. when the second round, which was halted by a wicked storm, gets underway. I was staring 1-over on the round down and instead make the turn in 2-under.

One swing changed everything. “I wasn’t quite able to do that today at points”.

David Lingmerth made only four pars in his wild round of 2-under 70 and was the clubhouse leader at 7-under 137. But the suspension does him no favors. When players were evacuated from the course, 11 players were separated by three shots.

The world number five picked up six shots in six holes from the ninth, including a 13-foot eagle putt at the 11th, and later rebounded from a double-bogey at the 15th by draining a curling 24-footer at the 17th.

It was eventful the rest of the way for McIlroy, who injured his left ankle last month and entered the year’s final major unsure of what to expect from his game. So, that would leave me eight shots back.

“We’ll see how it goes (today)”, Day said. “But I’m real happy to be done”.

Johnson, meanwhile, fell back to a tie for 12th, 1-over through 14 holes, 5-under for the week.

Lingmerth raced to eight under with three birdies in the first five holes, but he then double-bogeyed the seventh and bogeyed the next two before starting the back-nine with four birdies in five holes while dropping further shots at 11 and 15.

“It’s incredible to be in the lead at a Major”.

“I remember telling (caddie) Michael (Greller) we’ve got birdie opportunities on this side, so let’s try to get to three to get to 10 under”, Spieth said. My speed on the greens has been really good, which is huge for me when I putt.

“It’s such an interesting golf course”, said Kaymer, who won the 2010 PGA Championship on the course in a playoff. That gets me through that. Day’s countryman Matt Jones is also at 9-under through 12. “But until then, we have a lot to play for”. “But we’re going to find it, I can tell you that”.

If McIlroy remains in contention, Johnson will be heading home after a 72 saw him miss the cut on three over, despite an opening burst of three straight birdies. He’s 4-over for the week through 13 holes with the cut at 2-over. Rose thought he was in the clear when he made it through 17 holes, only for the horn to sound and stop play. His drive found the right rough, and from there, he yanked his approach shot into a greenside bunker.

After missing a putt at 10, Spieth said, he told himself “it s now or never”.
