“I join with other Utahns in mourning the tragedy in Washington County and Zion National Park”, Gov. Herbert said.

Then at 1:30 am on Tuesday, searchers found their first body, Rick’s brother-in-law, Sgt Steve Arthur. The flood water swept away multiple vehicles in the Utah-Arizona border town, killing several people.

Search and rescue volunteers search for a missing person around Short Creek in Colorado City, Ariz., Wednesday, September 16, 2015.

Carter said it appeared that the vehicle had been swept away by floodwater.

Six bodies recovered in Zion National Park. “Ninety percent of Zion is wilderness”, Picard said”.

The other victims of the flash flood were identified Thursday night as Robin Brum, 53, of Camarillo, California; Gary Favela, 51, of Rancho Cucamonga, California; Mark MacKenzie, 56, of Valencia, California; Muku Reynolds, 59, of Chino, California; and Don Teichner, 55, of Mesquite, Nevada.

Authorities are releasing the names of those killed in this week’s rampaging flash flooding in the Zion National Park.

She was discovered a few miles from the sandstone gorge where the group got trapped during a violent rainstorm, in an area that had been unreachable previously amid fears of more flooding. For the next three days, searchers found the rest of the victims.

The flood struck Monday afternoon while a group of seven people was in Keyhole Canyon, a narrow canyon formed by water wearing through rock over the centuries, the park service said.

The park is investigating what led to the deaths and reviewing its policies, but the process for canyon entry permits is decided at the national level and any changes would likely need to come from the top down, Eaker said.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those affected by the flash flooding in Keyhole Canyon”, Superintendent Bradybaugh said in a statement.

“She leaves a hole in our hearts and our lives that will never be filled”, the family said.

“The area is close to the Utah border about 15 miles west of Hildale, where a different flash flood Monday killed 12 people and left one missing”.

Raging waters swept two cars downstream, leaving a six-year-old boy still missing. Three other children survived.

Washington County Emergency Services in Utah said no contamination has been found, pending water sample testing, but that boiling water for one minute would guarantee it’s safe to drink.

“Hail the size of marbles just started coming down”, said Jordan Birnbaum, who noticed the flooding and started to run out.

The Zion Park Incident Commander, Therese Pickard, said that canyoneering in slot canyons in Zion Park is an incredibly popular activity. It’s considered an entry-level canyon for people who have some experience but are still new to the sport.

Steve Arthur was a 21-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, where he was a sergeant and recipient of a local Medal of Valor award for trying to save an accident victim from a burning vehicle, according to the Ventura County Star.

Only 80 people are allowed in per day.

Zion spokeswoman Aly Baltrus said some members of the group were new to canyoneering, but they took a class to prepare. He would drop what he was doing and go out to help them.

“He was one of those guys that everybody really liked”.
