A seven-year-old girl drowned in the Ocean City Inlet Saturday night, officials said. Waters said she doesn’t know the exact time of the incident, but it occurred after 5:30 p.m. because that’s when lifeguards are no longer on duty.
The girl was at beach with family friends and Waters says those friends immediately called 911 after the girl disappeared with the wave. Rescue divers found the child, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Coast Guard, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police, Ocean City Fire Dept. and Ocean City Beach Patrol all were on scene.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to the United States Coast Guard Station, where Ocean City EMS continued lifesaving efforts.
An autopsy to confirm the cause and manner of death is being conducted by the office of the chief medical examiner in Baltimore.
Waters says the water was rough on Saturday, and she urged people not to swim unless lifeguards are present.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard says crews have stopped searching for a man who went missing while swimming off Ocean City.
